I picked up my 200mm f/2.8L II this morning. Sharp as a tack, here's a quick test shot of the cat, 1DmkIII ISO400, 1/500s, f/2.8. I've included a 100% crop of the eye. Processed though LR with sharpening on default settings and output sharpening on screen, normal.

edit: another shot, same sharpening as before (ie the defaults in LR2)

Wow, wow, wow and wow. It certainly is tack sharp :woot:

You must be the first tog on here to have one...you lucky so and so

Calm down... it's the 2.8 version, the little black lens not the monster white one

Tis a nice bit of kit...even if it is black and not white. I thought long and hard before picking one up as it seemed too close to the 180L to be worth the outlay. The 180L does the business close up but can't match the 200L in the telephoto stakes.

 I think I'm getting Matt Sayle itis

Fantastic though, bet you're very chuffed with it :woot:

Nice one. It really is a cracking lens. Sue (whooshdemon) uses one and it is fantastic. Takes extenders well too. And, it's really light compared with the zoom!

OOOOooohhhh I'm drooling. I want one.... buuuhhuuu

(and I dont mean the cat)

hmm was thinking of renting one of these for a week away...., even more tempted now!

looks nice and sharp - it would be great to see a test between

200mm f1.8
200mm f2
200mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8 is

all taking shots at 200mm and f2.8 to see which would be the sharpest - i suspect it would be in the above order but it may not, the 200 1.8 is an old lens now, as is the 200 f2.8 so the newer lenses may have the edge (or not???) the 200 f2.8 is by far the best quality for the money, and from the above shots well worth the money

Compares 100% crops from a test chart between the 200mm f/2.8L II and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS both at 200mm, f/2.8

With the pointer over the chart it shows the prime, mouse over the chart to see the zoom. You can also play with the settings to compare different apertures. At f/4 the difference is much smaller but it's the wide open sharpness that wins for me.

You can also change lens in the chart so you can compare the f/1.8 or f/2 as well - the new f/2 has some incredible resolving power

just a bump as I added another pic and a full size jpg for pixel peeping, see post #1

Popping the 180L into the chart for comparison clearly shows the superior resolution of the 200L. This quickly disappears at very close focus and I can only assume that the unusual front element of the 180 greatly improves sharpness when close up but is detremental to normal telephoto useage.

Just digging up an old thread here. I've got a lust for one of these lenses. Where did you get yours? doesn't seem to be many about.
