New tripod

That looks like a very nice piece of kit.

I've got a Gitzo 2228 cf tripod with a Manfrotto 488RC4 ball head.

The tripod is beautifully built, out classes the head i have to say.

i got my manfrotto 055 pro in the post today:D , still aint unpacked it yet:suspect1: , lol, it has the 322RC2 head,

off to have a play.............:thumb:

MyPix:whistle2:

While you're playing, take some pics! :D

Just got the 322RC2 head myself - does anyone else find it odd that the head is off-centre (ie not over the actual ball).

This would have serious implications for panoramas..??

OK, is it only mine that is not centred??

Can't say I ever really noticed the offset although I almost always use it attached to a lens and not the body. You could get the adapter and use it like a 222 which would put the ball in the centre.

Its not a head I would ever try and use for panaormas though. Would need separate horizontal and vertical controls for that.

I could do panoramas with my Gitzo ballhead, just took some effort to get level. This is, in effect, just a ballhead with a handle, so I don't see why it couldn't be used for panoramas.

I want to use the head in the horizontal position to increase stability (I am using at minimum a D200 with battery grip a 70-200mm VR lens and an SB-600 flash on it).

It is offset from centre whether mounted to hte body or a lens, surely? as the tripod mount on most bodies is in line with lens..

I didnt say you couldnt, but I wouldnt choose to do so. You obviously believe it is going to be an issue due to the offset which was presumably designed in to allow horizontal or vertical operation (allowing them replace the 222 maybe).

I have seen 600mm lenses used on the 222 but as you say, I chose the 322 because of the stability of the horizontal mode.

Agreed, just speculating why I hadnt seen it as an issue. Probably more to do with the type of photo's I take.

All fair points..

I don't see it being a huge issue, just surprised me. All other ballheads I have seen/usedmounted the camera directly over the centre..

It doesn't seem to affect the stability of the tripod/head setup and I have managed decent panoramas hand-held, so it shouldn't pose too much of a problem..

Just wanted to make sure I hadn't put it back together wrong when I changed it to left-handed operation ;)
