Hey all, new user new completely new to photography. Im looking at getting a DSLR and many have suggested the Canon E-OS 1000d, where would be the best place to talk about it on this forum? I.e what i can expect, reviews and general help to start me off.

Hi JamesB

Welcome to the forum.
Wow what a question to start with!!!
First of all work out how much you are prepared to spend, don't forget the memory cards arn't included with the camera so budget for that as well. I would suggest drawing up a list of 3 or 4 cameras and going to a photographic shop to see which is easier for you to hold and the ease of the controls.
It can make all the difference as to how steady you can hand hold a camera between one that sits comfortably in your hand and one that doesn't.

I would personally recommend buying just above your limit if the camera has a lot more features. You may not need them initially but eventually you will outgrow your camera and be looking to upgrade and you will loose far more in the upgrade than getting the more expensive one in the first place.

As for lenses most people go for either Canon or Nikon as both companies do have a large option to choose from apart from 3rd party makes.

Have a look at this site which may help you

Cheers mate, ive held and tested a few and i prefer the feel of the 1000d to others i have handled. I've got about £400 to spend on camera and lens. I have however been looking at the Samsung ZX10 i think its called and i like how you can shoot 720p hd video on it but i wonder if it can take as good pics on it as you can on the 1000d.

I am in the camp of a DSLR for still photos and a movie camera for obviously taking movies.

I would in all honest be a little weary of a DSLR camera in that price bracket doing both, having read on the subject the general feeling from magazine tester etc is the Canon 7D at around the £1100+ mark is about where the still/movie produce reasonable results. You may get a compact doing it but then you are restricted in so many other ways like no lens choice etc.
That camera you quote (Samsung ZX10 ) is actually a mobile phone with photo capabilities not a proper Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR ) camera, so are you loking for a mobile phone that takes photos?

No mate, i must have got confused i didnt mean the phone. I thought it might be best also to just stick with a camera for taking pics, we have a camcorder but could do with a new one as its only tape lol. Ive seen the compacts with lenses and quite like the look but i prefer the feel and steadyness of the dslr's :)
