New walkabout lens. Nikon d5000

Its time to upgrade the kit lens on my D5000. I would like a D7000 but that's in 3 months or so.

I've looked at the tamron 17-50 and the sigma 17-70. I had the sigma a few years ago on my old Sony a200 and liked, but what other lens's should I look at??? My budget is max £400-450 but I'd like to spend as little at possible.

I've heard good things about the sigma 17-70, a mate has one and loves it

worth looking on Flickr for example shots, there seems to be a group for most lenses

The 17-70 is a very good versatile lens for walking around with.

I had one a while ago and it performed very well, especially for the price. Just make sure you get the version with a focusing motor in the lens, its a bit more expensive but at least you can use it to AF on your D5000.

i prefer the 17-50 Tamron f2.8 actually ...... the extra 20mm you can use your feet to zoom in. The constant f2.8 is good and i prefer that, but everyone's taste is different.

The Sigma 18-50 2.8 HSM and Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS HSM are both worth looking at too. The former is no longer sold but is easy to find used (make sure it's the HSM version) for less than £200.

The sigma 17-50 will cost a fair bit more but is in a league above all of these lenses in my opinion.

And lastly, it's worth considering the 16-85 vr.
