Before I really got into photography I spent 6 months on a New Zealand road trip. I bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D3100, just before setting off and that trip as it turned out unearthed a previously unknown love of landscape photography that was previously buried somewhere within my person!

I shot loads of stuff, looking through my pictures now the vast majority are really poorly composed, really poorly exposed or just plain out of focus. It's so frustrating actually knowing where I was - a wonderful country with the sort of scenery a landscape photographer can only dream off at almost every turn - and seeing the shots I've taken that just don't come close to the standard I feel I could do now. There are however a few gems in there and on some occasions I've actually shot RAW so I've been able to bung a handful into Lightroom, crop and process them to produce some images I'd be happy with now. New Zealand is a country and will definitely be returning to as soon as humanly possible.

So here we are and I thought I'd share a few of them here for the good folk of Talk Photography (-:

They are mostly great although 2nd shot does nothing for me. Looks like a really stunning place.

It's really frustrating when you look back thinking you could do better. I'm the same with New York, I wish I'd had my DSLR then, although my wife is probably happy that I didn't as she wouldn't have seen me for days.

The 2nd was from a seat in a helicopter, through the glass. It took some cleaning up!

Some truly lovely images there

1 and 6 are very similar shots of the same view, but both are good.
2 is actually really good, but reckon its a tad under exposed but the shado2s and golden light give it bags of atmosphere
3, very dramatic, a tad unnattural looking
4. really like
4. I like the idea, but the split doesn't sit right, the gap between the wave break and the island is too small
7, pleasant enough but I prefer the calmness of the other 1 and 6
8. Nice idea,

Hi Tom

I like number one , for the following reasons

The image is

Clear
Clean
Crisp
Sharp
Lovely directional lighting
Interesting subject matter
Good composition
Foreground interest
Not too much sky

the only thing I would have used is a small amount of fill in flash to pop the foreground from the shadows

Well done (y)

Hi Tom,

I had exactly the same experience as you. I went to NZ about 6 years ago now and with a cheap 400D. I always enjoyed photography but knew very little about the technical and compositional aspect. Since returning from the trip I have enhanced my knowledge in to become a pro now specialising in motorsports.

What I'd do to go back with the knowledge I have and the kit I own now.

Lovely set of images.

Fantastic to hear.

Thanks for the responses folks. Much appreciated.

I have number 6 printed to canvas and mounted in the living room now, at 1.3 metres wide it looks pretty good!

Thats a lovely set of shots. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all perfect wall hangers. 5 is probably the pick of the bunch for me, but I would be more than happy to have taken any of these.
Can't offer much in the way of constructive crit, as I'm not qualified, but I loved looking through them. Thanks for sharing! But I don't thank you for making me want to go to NZ even more, as I can't afford it right now! Grrr
