Hi,

Just wondering if anyone had any good resources they could point me toward on digital photography?

I'm also looking to pick something up as cheap as possible (second hand I should think) So i can have a play around.

Thanks

Welcome Paul

I found this book by Scott Kelby a good start as it explains how to achieve something rather than telling you about technical stuff without the how to apply.

But there is also loads of stuff on here bot by folk answering specific questions and some tutorials.

As to getting a camera, I'd recommend second hand from a reputable local dealer. I'd avoid the large chains and find a local store.

The following book "Digital Exposure Handbook" is well written in plain English, easy to follow, and will answer many questions for you LINK

Thanks for the links i'll check them out.

No idea what cameras to be looking out for, i'll have to read up on them as well

So I went to a camera shop today and had a play around with some different models.

Didn't really like like the feel of the Nikon but loved the Canon cameras, so i'll probably be going for one of them.

The problem I have is at the moment I work part time so i'm pretty poor but I was thinking of maybe picking up an old camera from the bay (something like a 300D) to learn the basics etc and then getting a better camera later in the year when i've got some cash. Any thoughts?

The 300d was an excellent camera back in the day (the first sub £1000 dslr I recall) but it is starting to show it's age. You should be able to pick one up cheap and yes it will let you learn the basics.

I was going to suggest that you just save up a while and get the camera you want, but getting a cheap 300d is only going to get you hooked that much quicker, go for it!

A word of warning though, the camera isn't the most expensive part of the hobby! Once you're hooked lenses, tripods, lighting and courses will leach your every spare penny.

Thanks for that :)

I'm looking at the 350 and 400 as well as the price difference isn't too big (if you're lucky it seems) which might not show as quite as old.

I think that's the way i'm going to go as it'll be a while before I can get something decent

Both are decent bodies, still capable of producing some excellent shots. Go for it.

This website has a wealth of knowledge!

I bought this book a couple of days ago from work (we have a book club thing) for £4. Seems decent, more of an overview than detail but there is also some fantastic shots in there.

I bought my camera and a lens from this website, you need 100 posts to view the trade area now but stick around and with time you'll have that and be able to pick some decent second hand gear up from here.
