Hi all,
I am relativly new to this and have a few queries.
I mainly use the camera for mountainbiking and wanted to know,
can you get a seperate flash for the Canon 450D?
As in you put it on a tripod somewhere else.

You can fit external flashes to your 450D, Known as Speedlites, Canon have two main ones, the 430EXll and the larger 580EXll . These are not cheap but there are also cheaper 3rd party flashes suitable to your canon.
 
Sweet, I think I have seen them before. How does it work? Does a transmitter go onto the flash mount? What 3rd party brands are there?
 
The Speedlites can simply sit on the cameras hotshoe or then can be used off camera. If you have a look in the lighting section here you will find lots of info and help there.

I recommend Youngno flashes to everyone (as they are the best for the cheapness) also Nissin flashes are good quality.
To get the flash synced with your camera you will need off camera shoe cord or radio triggers (better option, just because of the distance they can work from). As with the speedlights there are cheaper and more expensive triggers. In my opinion PocketWizards are outstanding, however the price..uhhh. If you want something cheap that works just great, get Youngo RF602 or Cactus V2s or V4.

As longest it does the job (flashes the flash) it's fine. Also try get more than one speedlight, because you'll find just one limiting you.

Sam, since you say you photograph mountain biking your probably needing a bit more of an advanced understanding than most people who have just bought a cam and want to take photos of their kids. And also a bit more of an understanding than would be sufficiently compressed into a single forum post so i'd send you over to the strobist blog which is probably the best place to get you from where you are to where you want to go. Hunt for the lighting 101 section.
