Newbie needing buyer advice

Hey there everyone, just getting into SLRs and I've been looking into a few and have narrowed it down to 3 that I fancy:

Canon 450d (second hand)
Nikon D3000 (second hand)
Nikon D3100 (brand new)

I know that the D3100 has the best features as it is the newest but my Dad keeps saying Canon are the best and easiest to get lenses for, urgh I just don't know, any help would be much appreciated

Go into a shop like Jessops and actually hold them - Canons feel very different to Nikons. I find the button arrangement on Nikons counter-intuitive and it doesn't really work with the possible spread of my hands, but obviously some people really love them.

I second what the above poster has said. Just go to a shop and have a feel how the cameras feel on your hands. Both brands offer good enough range and excellent cameras and lenses, also both ranges readily available.
For me the choice was made for other reasons (my husband has a Nikon SLR film camera), but I anyaway prefer the handling of a Nikon, while my brother in law preferred the Canon.
 
The best will be the one you find the most comfortable and easiest to use.

Performance across a price range will be similar, its different shapes, size and layout.

I've got the d3100 and find it so easy to use and simple (i've not looked at the manual yet), yet most people I know shoot with canons
 
Do you know anyone with either Canon or Nikon kit, it may make sharing kit easier if you have the same brand.
 
Yep +1 as above I got a nikon D80 as a mate has a D90 with a number of lenses which I can borrow of him if needed.
 
I'd rather buy new than used myself as that should be the safest ownership experience so if you are willing to buy a new Nikon 3100D why not look at a new equivelant costing Canon model and decide between the two?

Unless your dad has some gear you'd like to borrow and you are swayed towards Canon you can just try them in a shop and go for what feels best.
