Newbie question about printing guidelines

Hi all - can I ask a dumb newbie question...
Popped this originally in the welcome thread - but no responses so thought I would try here.

I can't figure out which section would include info on printing...
I've done a search - but it comes with so many hits I can't make sense of it...
And suspect there might be a 'sticky' post somewhere on this...

Are there some basics on how to find a supplier/printer, and what to be aware of in terms of sizing and colours, type of paper/material and finish, framing etc.

I've got lots of photos now - and want to start getting them printed up - preferably in fairly large sizes to go on walls as artwork.
I love the idea of getting them printed up on a frameless material like mdf or aluminium (rather than canvas)

Are there some existing threads on this topics - and can anyone help me find them!!!

i use my local max speilmann and go down there every saturday to print off pics. the staff know me really well there.
