hi, need some help. im going to be starting a sixth form course in photography. need to get myself a camera, any recommendations?

Hi James welcome to TP and your BUDGET would help us point you in the right direction ;)

Welcome to TP James :)

My recommendation would be a second-hand D40 or if the budget will stretch then a new D3000. Both are excellent cameras for learning on.

Errrm, with such budget I would advise you on getting this a Canon G9. They are fantastic Compact cameras and well worth the money. Or you could go for a second-hand G10, but personally I think that a brand new G9 would be just as good and a little bit lighter on your budget.

When you start the course, could you please write to me and let me know what the course is like, whether you are enjoying it etc. I am in Year 10, so in about 1 and a half years I will be going to 6th form and I am thinking of taking photography too.

Good Luck and thanks in advance!

I don't think you'll get a dSLR for that sort of money.

I'm using a Fuji Finepix s1500, which lets take manual control of most things although you have to use the autofocus.

Another option would be a 35mm (film) SLR. But you've then got the cost of processing and film. Not to mention the wait, if on your course you're expected to review your work immediately then this would be a problem.

i've just found one, samsung pro815 (£170). cant change the lens. anyone know if this is worth getting?

You should be able to get a Canon 10D with kit lens, if you look in the For Sale on this forum, still a decent DSLR , vast range of lenses too.

You should check with your course tutor what sort of camera he or she recommends. I can't imagine using a Point and Shoot for instance. They may be quite specific about using a film SLR, in which case a s/h Pentax K1000 is a popular choice. If a DSLR is recommended, the Canon 10D suggested is a good s/h choice. You may also be able to pick up a Sony A100 or Nikon D70 at around your budget.
