Hi, I'm a newbie based in Milton Keynes and am looking to start in photography. Can someone advise me on equipment? Cannon 600d v Nikon 5100?
Thank you :)

Canon vs Nikon eh?

Go to a shop and pick them up and see how they feel in your hand and how instinctive you feel the menus are etc..
They will both take great photos and both makes have great lenses and companies such as sigma make lenses to fit both aswel.

Hi Linda & Welcome

Have you narrowed your choice to these 2 bodies specifically ?

The best advice you'll have, is (as Gareth says) to go and try them out to see which feels best in your hands, which bodies buttons, menu system etc etc feel the most natural for you.

Shot wise / function wise - they are all very much similar, there may be slight differences between the bodies, but on a whole they are all built to a certain spec and will produce as good images as one another...

Do you have anyone you know that owns a camera system - this can come in handy if you have the same manufactorer for help & advice, trying out different lenses they may have / possibly even borrowing one...

When you start off with a new camera, you are buying into a system and most of the time, people generally do not switch manufactorers once they start off - hence why it's recommmended you try the cameras out...

Hope this is of some help, ask away if you have any other questions, we will always try to help...

I can't disagree with the above at all.

I would always recommend going and having a play around with them, find out where the buttons are.

When I first started out I was told exactly the same and found I had to stretch to reach a few of the Nikon controls and I was originally going to buy Nikon lol.
