NEX-6 adapter for M42 lenses

Hi

Hi got an adapter for my NEX-6 to be able to fit m42 lenses. However, after I fitted a 50mm M42 lens, I realised that the field of view is much narrower than 50mm on my 16-50 kit lens that came with NEX camera. The M42 lens with an adapter looks more like 70-80mm than 50m. Any idea why?

That doesn't sound right at all. Are you certain that you're using a 50mm lens? The reason I ask is that many people start with the Helios 44 which is actually a 58mm lens, and is quite a bit narrower.

The M42 adapter just looks big- it is making up the flange distance difference.
A the man (sic ) says, Are you using a Helios?

Now i feel dumb. Of course this is a 58mm helios. Thanks for solving this 'mystery'

You might like the Industar if you want a smaller 50mm. It's an f3.5 and is pretty cheap.

Another decent (stopped down a little) option is the Pentacon 50/1.8. The Asahi Takumar 55/1.8 (or cheaper f/2 version, which is the same lens with a baffle) is even better, but with a narrower field if view of course .

The industar is great fun though and can be very sharp.

For a compact 50mm f1.8 I'd suggest Olympus Zuiko. You can probably find one for £15 or so.

Note, the Olympus 50/1.8 in M42 mount is pretty rare. The OM mount version is plentiful but would require a different adapter.

The king of classic M42 50s would be the Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50/1.8 or the Takumar 50/1.4 I reckon.

Thanks for all the advice. Can you recommend any cheap 35mm fast lens on m42 mount?

The Russian Mir-24 35/2 is good but around £100 (can be found in M42 or Nikon mount). The black and silver Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35/2.8 can be had for around half of what it's more famous (and not that much better) 35/2.4 brother goes for. If you see one in good nick for £50, grab it!

The Tokina made Vivitar 35/2.8 is OK as well, but bear in mind that none of these lenses will have great corner performance. They will give you a faster aperture than a standard kit lens though, of course.
