Next body upgrade?

Currently have a 600d I shoot portraits and the occasional wedding I want to keep the 600 but wondering what the next step would be as regards body. Don't want to go full frame as I have a few ef-s lenses. All I can think of is 60d or 7d. Are the ISo performance of these 3 cameras similar ?

I know but I'd only have my 70-200 2.8 and 50mm 1.8 to use on a 5d mkii. I don't think selling my 600d plus 17-55 2.8 and 60 mm 2.8 both efs would raise enough to buy a mk II

Steve leapt in and ignored your initial precondition about full-frame, but in doing so he bagen to pull form you some basic details that would help anyone give a better answer:
  1. How much have you already got invested in the 600D/EF-S system? - lenses, extras, etc
  2. How much have you got emotionally invested the EOS family of cameras? - would you be prepared to completely switch system?
  3. How much are you prepared to invest in a new body? - what's you're cash budget?

At the moment you have access to all the information, the more you can share the more likely someone will be able to give a sensible answer.

Sticking with APS-C EOS cameras, the current line-up choices are the 650D, 60D or 7D. Looking at older bodies the 40D and 50D come into consideration. It's down to just those five bodies if you want to keep the EF-S lenses.

with canon you have to make a compromise- with nikon you get the d3 if you're a pro, you get the d3x if you're a studio pro, and you get the d700 if you're anything else, with canon the line is blurrier.

I've never been impressed with the image quality of the current round of crop sensor cameras, I think i'd rather take a 50d over a 60d. So i'd definitely go full frame.

Your options here are limited- the 5d3 is a truly great camera, but it's major $$$, the 5d2 is competitively priced but the AF truly sucks, although if you're doing ok with your 600d you'll know how it works in low light. The original 5d is basically the 5d2 but with a crappier screen, less iso options and a lower megapixel count
so if you want the af of the 5d3, with the resolution of the 5d2, and the price of the 5d , you end up with the 1dsmk2- the least compromised camera out there, for a time it was canon's flagship, nothing taken away, nothing crippled, so for around 800 you get professional AF, full frame, professional body, image quality that destroys the equally priced and overly complicated 7d, the only drawback, is size- weight, and ok so it only goes to iso 3200 which sucks but you can't get everything for under 1k

as you say, the 7d and 60d are the same as your current camera just with better AF and weather sealing- what is it that you actually want to upgrade?
if it was me, i'd get the 5d mk1, the 50mm and 70-200 are really all you need!

keep the 600d and use the 17-55 on it, as on a crop camera it's better than the 24-70 on full frame (you get IS!) and it's not as big or heavy
then you have a portrait machine (70-200 on 5d), and 2 bodies for weddings both with excellent zoom ranges, and a 50mm prime for low light work on the 5d, and portraits on the 7d- it's unbeatable, and the 5d along with the 1dsmk2 are the biggest bargains in photography right now

What about the Canon 5D MkI? It still produces lovely images.

The only canon APS-C body worth consideration for serious jobs is 7D. That's the only one with reliable AF. Or simply have a look at used 1D / 1Ds series.

While 40D produced the results for me it was a constant hard struggle.

As others have said, Canon's bodies are limited. its not like nikon who cater for basically everyone needs at great affordable prices.

There has been lots of people in the past contemplating on whether they shoudl get a 5d2 or a 7d. the reason is because both camera's have major flaws on what people want from there next camera.

the flaw with the 7d is that it is a crop sensor and therefore, IQ will be the same on even a 500d. All you get is a great AF system and other little neat features, plus a a great viewfinder. So with the 7D all u get as a upgrade is new features, not IQ improvements.

Now take teh 5d2. its a FF sensor and therefore will improve your IQ in terms of noise handling and bokeh but the feature set is no better then a 500d o even a 400d.

What som folks want is a nice feature set improvements plus FF sensor. this is wher ethe 5d3 comes into play. it is the CAMERA many have been wanting for years but it costs an arm and a leg at the moment.
the 5d3 should have been what the 5d2 should have been ie FF sensor with up to date features like AF system.

Now lets take a look at nikon. Does Nikon have same issue? do they have a FF sensor that has a nice feature set?

yes they do and its called the d700. the d700 came out same time as the 5d2 and it blows it out of the water having same FF sensor AND a fantastic AF system. 5d2 doesnt have that.

Now take a look at the new d800. they have upted there feature set and MP and guess what the price of that is, its around £500 cheaper then a 5d3.

It sounds like u have it in for Canon in general! Perhaps you should list some of the flaws of the D800 and D700 too... Just a thought but by the canon bashing you just did I'm guessing that you would say that Nikon has NO flaws and they are perfect!
5D2 same as a 400D
7D same as a 500D come on....

5d2 has similar af as my 400d. 7d sensor is same sensor as 500d/600d.

come'on OP only has got 600D. Pretty much anything will be a good upgrade from there.

I think you will find it is actually more of a Snobby comment of the day, is that clear?

And by pointing that out in that manner means I now get Patronising comment of the day - thank you very much :)

not when his upgrading to another crop body b in 650, 60d or 7d. same sensor, same IQ, same ISO noise handling.

that is my point about the 7d mate

Yes, the sensor is the same ...ish. But then I would take a slightly noisy sharp photo any day over clean out of focus blur. Expose 7D to the right, keep ISO down and it should be fine for print. I am not saying the sensor is NOT out of date

Yes but as I said the sensors are the same and the noise and iq won't change. You will only get more on focus stuff. Better video. Better controls etc but not iq. It all depends what the OP cares more. More features? More iq? Both? The only camera that can offer both in Canon line is the 5d3 whilst you have d700 and d800 that cam offer both.

You can get clean iso 12800 that'd usable without any pp. Same can't be said for any of the crops.

You're basically gaining in the body department (top LCD, larger body) plus some better build quality.

It's refreshing to hear someone not heading down the full-frame route :)

It'll be interesting to see when Canon brings out its 60D and 7D successors and how performance is increased

There is a website where you can compare ISO performance between cameras but I can't for the life of my remember it. Maybe someone else will pipe up.... :)

I can picture that site in my head. Damn it!

EDIT: Isn't always a coin they use and another image which has colouring pens/pencils in it etc?

Wasn't the site I was thinking of, but looks useful nonetheless.

The one I'm thinking of has a set of test images and you can select ISO plus raw or JPEG and the images from the two cameras sit side-by-side

Yea I think I know the site your on about but can't remember it either

If you want an EF-S mount on a good low light performer the new 650D is worth a look. The ISO capabilities are very good and the AF has improved substantially from the 600D and the video capabilities are amazing. Other than that, I've found the 60D is pretty good in low light, better than the 7D IMO, and the AF will be an improvement too.
You would be better off going with a second hand 5D2 though, it's just the EF-S lenses wont fit.

Not really in terms of IQ alone especially for a crop sensor, in fact it's probably better or equal at handling high ISO than a 1DS mark II.

7D has the same sensor as 60D 650D 600D and the 550D but not the 500D although the 500D is still a very good camera. I get what u mean from the IQ upgrade point of view as all from the 550D to the 7D share the same sensor and therefor no upgrade would be done IQ wise.
