Currently I have a Nikon d3100/kit, 40mm micro & 55-300mm tele.
I like to take bird photos and macro nature shots.
My telephoto doesn't really get the distances for birds and I'd like a better macro lens.
I've decided to give up on birds until I can afford the right gear but would like to improve my macro lens.
I am selling / have sold my tele and micro and will also change my camera if need be.
Which direction ?

I would first like to buy the best macro lens to suit my d3100, suggestions please :)

Dunno about Nikon lenses but I have a Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro that seems to be pretty good :D

Thanks Alan, I'm doing a lot of research and the Sigma 105 is highly recommended, would your recommendation suit a DX?

I used my 150mm on a 20D (which is APS-C) for years.

One advantage of longer lenses is that it allows you to take shots from further away and that could matter if what you're shooting is likely to get spooked by the camera and run or fly away :D The drawback is that longer lenses are bigger and heavier.

All of the Siggy macro lenses seem to be well regarded.

Sorry that I can't help with Nikon lenses but it's many years since I was a Nikon shooter and even when I was I didn't have a macro lens.

No problem, I'm not bothered about the manufacturer I just want the best lens for my camera.

I think a Tamron 90mm or Sigma 105mm would do just fine for macro as for a tele defo a Sigma 50-500 it's not the cheapest and lightest option but a true gem :)

The Tamron 60mm macro was made for DX cameras, would the 90mm also be suitable ?

The Tamron 90 is a lovely lens, Tamron have recently released an updated version with VC and a focus motor - the older version won't af on a D3100, the new one will.
