Hi

I have at the moment a Canon EOS 300D and looking to upgrade. I was gonna buy a second hand 1d Mark 2 but still undecided. I am looking for a not too expensive camera if new, or second hand if really good that is good for airshows or fast moving photography and the better image quality etc

Just any help or opinions on cameras would help as mine is now old and so many out there to buy.

Thanks

What lens are you currently using, remember EOS1D 5D and 6D series cameras will only take EF mount lens

I only mention the 5/6D series for completeness of answer although I know you did not specify them...

Now for aviation most DSLRs will cope but obviously being able to cope with ISO is good, you could also look at the 50D/60D better ISO, modern sensor, higher MP, still a 1.6x crop so same FoV your used to from your current camera

You could also consider a new XXXD series camera it's still going to be miles ahead of the 300D but with similar body size that your used to

Hi Mike

Budget wise £500 -£800. I have a Canon EF 75mm to 300mm and the kit 55m lens I got with my 300d.

Without wish to offend I think that your lenses are rather ho-hum, but having owned a 300D I wouldn't sugest it as a dream camera for demanding subjects and conditions.

In your position I think I'd want to think carefully about what exactly to spend my budget on and I think I'd start by assessing how better lenses would perform on my camera rather than jump into getting a new camera and using the same rather pedestrian lenses on it. Depending on what is more important to you, a long zoom or a standard zoom maybe you could go for both a higher performing body and one better lens and upgrade the second lens later?

For airshows within your budget, a good idea would be the sigma 150-500mm os. You could get a used one for £500.

Put the rest towards a new body, you'll easily get a 40d or maybe a 50d.

That would cover the airshow aspect, but it depends upon what you mean by 'fast moving photography'. That lens would suffice for something like motorsport, but would be not much cop for things like football or skateboarding
