Next lens purchase for my d3

K I am looking to do more photojournalism over the next few months and am considering a 35mm lens. I have been looking about and the options seem a bit limited looking at a 35mm f2 D or the 35 f1.4G. Now there is a massive difference in price £250 or £1394 and obviously the wider aperture is important. Now I could probably afford the F2D without an issue, but the I would probably have to sell my 70-200 2.8 to fund it. (not a lens I use a great deal).

What is the quality of the f2 like does anyone use one and mind giving me their opinion.
 
The 35/2D is an excellent lens for someone who wants to shoot 35mm on full frame. I have one myself but it will probably be going on ebay very soon as prefer the 28/2.8D.

I would certainly prefer it to the 35/1.4G as it's much smaller, cheaper and lighter and even has a proper aperture ring.
 
The 35 f/2 is ok but the 35 f/1.4 is in a different league and a magical piece of glass. It's never off one of my bodies.

The argument about the aperture ring above is pants and irrelevant on a d3

It depends on whether you prefer turning an aperture ring or spinning a control wheel on the back of the camera.

The beauty of the aperture ring is that I can set the aperture without having to look at the LCD display. I can even set the aperture without even looking at the camera (eg set f/11 by clicking twice from the f/22 stop). Much more intuitive. The bottom line is that I prefer physical controls to electronic controls.

And you can do that on a d3 or d700 can you?
 
Only if you force some lack of functionality in the camera, or your setting up lenses far older then the 35 f/2

As I said its completely irrelevant on a modern camera and the relevant point is the 35 f/1.4 is worth every penny over the 35 f/2.
 
I'm so tempted by the 1.4g. But its just whether I can justify the cost over the f2. Saying that it would probably stay on my camera constantly.
 
How long are you going to keep the lens? The 35 G is pricey, but also likely to hold its value very, very well all the while giving you excellent shots. Not knocking the 35D...and it, too will hold some value. After reading endlessly about the new f/1.4 primes, I'm convinced the 35G is a special lens if it fits your shooting style.
