I have just bought a nikon D90 with a 50mm prime and the kit lens 18-105. I am using it for general family stuff and landscape shots of my days out. (now retired, so wife and i go out most days.)What recommenation would you more experienced members consider to be my next lens buy. Being on pension i do not want to spend money wastefully.

Hi David
If i had your setup i would go for a prime wide for landscapes regards

If you want to step up the quality from the 18-105, get a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8..... new they're £300 for the non-VC version. Great lens, optically brilliant.

I've just moved to a Nikon 17-55 and it's brilliant but they're expensive - £600 used, £900 new. Better build and faster AF than the Tamron but little between them optically

For landscape work, personally I'd go for a Nikon 12-24mm f/4 if you're flush (£450 used, £750 new) or a Tokina 12-24 mm f/4 (£250 used, £400 new). Personally, I'd get the Tokina if you're in a budget - difference between them us minimal. You then have a proper wide lens for vista and both take filters on the front.

If you want a telephoto then get a Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D.... Amazing lens and you get them used for about £450-500 for the later two-ring version.

A rough budget would be good... the 17-55 mentioned is a bloody pricey lens at around £900!

The 16-85 at £400 is nice if you want to replace your 18-105, but probably not worth it if budget is tight.

35mm f1.8 is a lovely wee prime at around £170, or if you want to zoom, the 55-200 VR is a bit of a bargain at around £150.

Welcome to TP :)

What's wrong with the lenses you've got? 18-105 is a very capable range - you can have ago at most things with that. The options for additional lenses run something like this, but is by no means prescriptive.

Super-wide 10-20-ish range for landscapes (also check out panoramic stitching technique for free).
70-300 range for sports/action and maybe a bit of wildlife.
Low f/number prime for creative shallow depth of field effects, like your 50mm.
Macro lens, or close up attachment like the Raynox DCR (£40, Amazon).

I would stick with what you've got until you find a need for something in particular. Personally, I would get a decent flash gun before any of those lenses and learn to use that for portraits etc. It will transform them. (Tip - bounce it, point it anywhere but directly at the subject, learn about light ;)).

I thank you all for your quick and informative replies. I have a budget of £200-£300. But taking on board all you said; i think i shall save a bit more and get a good quality wide angle lens. In reply to HoppyUK, i have purchased a nikon sb600 flash but as yet to put it
to use as still reading the manual???. Again thank you all.

I know it's not a lens, but have you thought about a tripod & remote trigger?
It'd help with your landscapes and you can play about with long exposures, HDR etc?
