I did go for the most common, rest, figuring if there was one shape people remembered from school, that would be the one.

I did try a few closer shots, but the closer I got, the more it looked like just a squiggle on a page. I felt at distance there was some context, and some shape to the shot. I was hoping the DOF would do the heavy lifting in terms of highlighting the subject.

I'd read that too, and I know they are on the general license (that covers what can be controlled under certain circumstances), but here they seem to feed quite cooperatively with the tits and finches we have. And, while they often turn up mob handed, the corvids do seem to push them around a bit.
