hi all, i am thinking about buying one of these for portraits and general close up shots, my question is i already have a 18-200mm canon IS lens, so would i benefit from buying one of these or not? all advise welcome, thanks.:thumbs:
 
The 18-200mm only has a maximum aperture of f/3.5, whereas the 50mm has one of f/1.8. That means it will perform a lot better in low light, and also gives you the ability to have a very narrow depth of field.
 
It is essential and great value for money, if you have the money get it, you won't regret it :)
 
To be honest the 50mm feels like it was designed to compliment the 18-200mm, as you know the superzoom will be limited on narrow aperture (f6.3 usually) however the versatility is amazing so most travel photographers buy the superzoom for everything but then buy the small 50mm f1.8 to slip in a coat pocket just in case you require a wide aperture and I must say it's a combo I'm tempted in trying.

I have a Sony a300 with Minolta 50mm f1.7 but when I can afford it I'll purchase the 18-270mm Tamron or 18-250mm Sony and I would say that it would be the best travel kit you could get :)

Well you will get a larger maximum aperture so that is useful for natural/ambient light. It is also useful in creating a background blur due to the depth of field at the larger apertures.

It won't be particularly great for closeup work unless coupled with a close-up lens or extension tubes.

I found it useful to have in the bag for aperture and cost reasons:thumbs:

cheers guy's, i think i may get one, its a cheap little lens, so not too much to lose really.
 
I agree with Mastertrinity - it will complement your 18-200 very nicely. Great for portraits, very sharp when stopped down to about f/2.8.

Buy one - you certainly won't regret it!
 
Good lens but surprised me just how shallow the depth of field can be so have a practice with it
