Sorry to seem a bit thick but I keep seeing "nifty 50" What is a nifty 50 and what type of photos would it be used for?

Im probably not the best person to give you an answer but as far aw i'm aware it refers to a 50mm prime lens (non zoom) Usually have wide apertures about F/1.8
 
Yup, it's a term commonly used to refer to a 50mm prime lens.

Canon's version is around £65 in the shops, and has a widest aperture setting of f1.8, which makes it very unique, and also cost effective (bang for buck).

Nikon also do a similar 50mm lens, although Im not sure about other manufacturers.
