Nifty 50

I have seen a lot of people now moving from croped,to full frame,and selling all their DX lens.

But also a lot seemed to be also selling their Nifty 50 as well.

So is the 50mm lens going out of fad again ? :)
 
I've just got a 5D MkIII and TBH the nifty fifty is excellent on it being FF. I always found the 50 to be a little bit long on a crop (550D and 7D) and until I got a 5D2 I hardly ever used it.
 
I've had the EF 50mm f/1.8 (Mark I) since new in 1990... no plans to eject it from the ship here.

Me too. I've just exchanged my 50mm for a 35mm and find it much more useful on a crop.
 
I never understood the fascination with that lens. I owned it for a short time and it was horrible.

I know it's cheap, but the pictures it took were phenomenally ugly.

Sharp as a tack, but ugly.
 
I think blaming an entire focal length for ugly pictures is a tad harsh. There have been many very beautiful pictures taken with 50mm lenses.
 
So would a 35mm be preferable to a 50mm on a crop camera like a d90. For general and indoor pics.

I didn't mean "a" 50mm lens, I mean "the" 50mm lens.

As in the Nifty 50; the lens being discussed in this thread.

I'm a newbie with 600d. The kit lens that came with it is a 18-55. I bought a 50 on the suggestion of a friend a few days after I bought my camera. I didn't use it much until recently and I have to say, the pics from the 50 blow away the 18-50.
 
I didn't find a 50mm to be very useful to me, I do however love the 85mm and drop down to my 14-24 if I want wider ... if choosing a prime in that range I would probably go for a 28 or 35.
