What is this lens good for?

I want to know if the type of shots it takes are worth me buying one.

And also what hood do i need?

The circular one or the flower type one?

I don't have one (yet) but people seem to recommend them for portraits particularly. The word is that the mark I version is superior in terms of build quality and focusing accuracy. They've stopped making them now but you can get them regularly on ebay for around £120-£150.

For the money it costs it is worth it. The 1.8 aperture really helps in low light, only the 50mm on crop is a bit long if you are indoors (something that might not fit everyone).
It makes great lens for portraits, have quite nice bokeh (the out of focus area). :) It is not the sharpest lens, but it is not bad (improves as the lens is stopped down).

About hood, Canon makes one for it, but to be honest it costs a bit too much, so I would not bother with getting one unless you want it desperately.

I used to have one, it was great lens and produced nice pictures. Unfortunately it did not survive, I broke it. :(

That will be the MKII wthe MkI had a metal case . I've heard a couple of times people have had the MKII spring apart on them . I've not really used mine just have it there for portraits as to can obtain quite a nice DOF with it . For £75 it's not a lot of money just to have in your bag .
As for the hood , you can pick up after market ones for a few pounds . I'm sure that the Canon one is about £25 - £30

i only have the 18-55 atm ... is it more worth me getting the 55-250 instead of the nifty 50

What do you plan to use it for? If you need more reach take the 55-250 if you need to work in low light take 50 1.8 Both lenses are good quality for money.

It really depends what you want it for you have two totally differant optic there .

i think i need thr 250 as i need zoom more than i need the 50

You can always buy a 50mm at a later date if you find that you need a faster cheap portrait lens

i think the ef 50mm 1.8 is overrated. whilst it is sharp from 2.8 onwards, that's about all it is.

it doesn't have great colour and contrast, the bokeh in my view is just awful and focussing is slow and noisy.

on the plus side, it is very cheap and light.

if you're just starting out, it's a great lens to learn about aperture and depth of field control.

on a crop body, it's a decent enough lens for portraits (again, for the money), but there are much much better performers out there which will just blow it out of the water.

as far as hoods go.... don't bother. you don't need it. the front element is recessed and it isn't hugely prone to flare.
