Been looking at them on eBay, and they go for around £50 a 50mm minolta 1.7 is there another option for around £50 worth looking at, or is the minolta my best option?

not for £50 there isn't an alternative worth looking at.
Bear in mind though that 50mm on APS-C gives the same field of view as 75mm on 35mm/FF.
There is also the 35/1.8 SAM which gives an equiv. fov as 52mm on FF.
 
I have the Minolta 50mm F1.7 lens and agree with lexie. Great lens for the price, highly recommended.
 
I'm surprised they're only £50 on fleabay. Generally they're £70+ ish when I've seen them for sale on here. Shop price is usually £90-£100.

Looked on fleabay and the cheapest is at £56 already. All the others seem to be bidding up to £90+ so I don't think you'll get one for £50.

Harrison cameras have one for £95 but that includes 12 month warranty. I'd go for that as with ebay you don't know what kind of condition it is really in.
 
i agree that the 50 1.7 is a great little lens..paid £40 for mine,but that was before folk caught on to how good this little lens was.i sold mine through lack of use for £100,but then wished i'd kept it...now have the sony 50 1.8 which is just as good optically,but a little plasticky build wise.
 
Yep, I got the 50 f1.7 and its a great little lens, really sharp and robustly built, go for it.
 
Another happy Minolta 50 f/1.7 user here - it was the first extra lens I bought for my A200, and it's very unusual for me not to have it in my camera bag - it's small and light enough to always have it, and gives great results.
 
You might be better checking the classifieds on this and other related forums - someone either switching from Sony, or upgrading to a 50 f/1.4 might be selling one, for example.

While you take a bit of a risk dealing with a 'stranger' on the net, people on these forums will generally take decent care of their gear, while a 'sight unseen' lens from somewhere like CeX might not be in the best of condition.

But cex give 12 months warrenty :?

Which means the lens will 'work', but is not a guarantee of condition.

Of course, if you find a local Cex has stock that you can physically examine prior to purchase then their prices do seem quite good at times - and with the added bonus that you can easily return it if something goes wrong, and may even be able to haggle the price down a little further (no idea what their policy is on this, but with anything s/h it's worth a try).
