Before anyone shoots me down I have searched this!!!!

Can someone tell me what the advantages of having one of these lenses is when I have the Canon 18 - 55 mm lens.

Yes yes I am being a total nubie on this one but just wanted to ask the question.

What sort of photography does this suit please?

Thank you for taking the time to answer. (if you do )

It has a much bigger max aperture than the kit lens (f/1.8 compared to f/3.5) and is also much sharper and has better IQ.
Downsides are it's a prime, so you need to zoom using your feet, and it's built like a toy out of an xmas cracker.
Having said that, I love mine. Makes you think about your composition more, and is stunningly sharp at about f/4.

Wide open it will let about 4 times the light into the camera, allowing much faster shutter speeds, or more usefully more usuable shutter speeds in dark conditions.

Also you can experiment with depth of field effects, where a narrow part of the image is in focus, and the rest is pleasingly blurred.

They pop up here in the for sale forum quite regularly, but are usually snapped up quite quickly.
Kerso also does them for £70 delivered, so they're not that expensive to buy new.

For the price, worth getting one to experiment with.

If you don't like it, it will sell pretty easily without losing much money

Good for doing head shots of the dogs animals etc then? what about scenery?

Depends what scenery! :p It's not very wide, especially on a crop sensor, so it's seen more as a portrait lens rather than a landscape lens but I guess it comes down to whatever fits the task at hand!!

I love my fifty, it's been on my body probably 75% of the time since I bought it....

Get one and have some fun!!

it's not a wide angle lens

however some people shoot landscapes with a 70-200 pro lens
this will be about 82ish mm on your 450D so a similar field of view

it's not my favourite landscape lens but it depends how you do this type of photography
at f4 or f11 it will be sharper than your kit lens I think

im constantly impressed with the IQ from canons cheapest lens (at least i think it is), it will be better than the kit lens in jsut about every scenario apart from the no zoom factor. i love mine to bits, 1.8 is amazing in low light and the DOF it creates is good for practisig skills and trying new ideas/composition.

id post a couple of pics but im sure there are loads about if you look.

You can use it for any type of shot, just bear in mind it's the equivalent of a 35mm film lens at 80mm. You can always stand further back to get more in though! ;) It's idea as a cheap portrait lens, and for use in low light, or if you like a shallow depth of field like this...

I love mine. I got it just before Christmas, and it has been brilliant for candid portraits of friends and family at all of those Christmas and New Year parties.
