Have you got it wide open? - At 1.4 you've got an extremely narrow DOF and it's not very forgiving. If it's dark (or not bright) your lens will have trouble deciding what to focus on anyhow.
You could try shining a torch, or similar at your subject to focus, and then lock it off in manual before recomposing for exposure without the torch.
You never said, but I'm assuming that it's focussing OK in brighter shots?

Gary with that large an aperture, and Dim conditions (such as indoors with lamps on (or nightclubs I guess - bit too old for them these days) I tend to manual focus anyway. Takes a bit of practice, but as long as you can see it, you should be able to focus it.
To be honest though, even with it wide open, you're going to get a fair amount of movement in clubs and whatnot unless you're at a really high ISO and can get a good shutterspeed.
