Use your widest aperture, work out the 500 rule for your lens, take some long exposures and get a copy of Gimp which is free. See how it goes from there.

Mike has already alluded to this but go somewhere with a really dark sky. Sensors are very good at picking up light pollution and capturing the Milky Way in light polluted area is going to be difficult, at best.
Also have a look at this free download - http://deepskystacker.free.fr/english/index.html , it has some useful information.

PS A head torch is useful, especially one which can produce a red light so your night vision isn't ruined every time you switch it on.

But if you use a head torch and there's anyone else around taking advantage of the dark sky, be very careful where you point it, even if it's turned to red.

Go for it. Being stood out in a field at night, in a quiet location is great, getting a decent photograph is a bonus 
I drove 60 miles last week and send a few hours on my own in a field photographing a copse of trees and star trails. Didn't get the exact photograph I was after, but I'll be back there soon.

For milky way photos, lens is most important. You might struggle to get a decent milky way photo with a kit lens. You really need a wide angle lens with at least f2.8 aperture. This website has loads of useful info http://www.lonelyspeck.com/astrophotography-101/

Been stood in a field in norfolk in almost pitch black. Couldn't see more than about 20 feet. Now picture the field scene from American werewolf in London. I could hear the noises but couldn't see anything.
Running with my camera gear in the pitch black wont ever be a hobby of mine.
Now I take a partner.
I don't have to be fast at running just not be the slowest...lol
