For part of my college coursework I have to cover a public event. One that I have chosen to cover is taken place this Sunday evening which is outdoors. It shall entail a foot parade with lit laterns, live music from bands and a bag piper. i was just wondering if you's have any tips or techniques on taking shots of groups of people in low lit situations without occuring too much blurriness?

thanks in advance

Having a lens with a very wide apature would be a massive advantage. Something like an f1.4 and you may get away without a flash. As I don't have an f1.4 lens I can't be certain. Obviously the other kit to have is a decent flash and plenty of batteries and a tripod/monopod for taking pictures of things that aren't moving too much. Also wacking up the ISO will help in poor light too.

Obviously you need to to pick and choose from those options. Shoot at f1.4 with a flash and a slow shutter speed on a tripod at 1600iso and you may over expose a little

If you've got a decent flash and a tripod (although you dont need the tripod) you could play with slightly longer exposures and second curtain flash sync in order to get nice light trails following behind the torch carriers...

Also - if the torches are near peoples faces then you might be able to get nice close portraits lit by the flames - worth a try but I would think you'll need to have a lens with a wide aperture - have you got a nifty fifty?

hey guys thanks for the tips, much apreciated. i have ordered a nifty fifty a couple of days ago so hoping it arrives before the event. couldnt quite afford the f1.4 version so sticking so gone with the cheaper f1.8. the best thing i think i can do is actually go out within the next few nights and just try some shots.

again thanks for the tips

Spot metering is your friend in these spots. If you put your metering on spot and pick out the lit parts that you want spoperly exposed you should get some good stuff.

Have fun

hey im wondering if flash is any good if your going to be far away from whats happening ? or would you just relay on long exposure
