Yes
went into town this evening and had the oppurtunity to get some nice shots of a band playing outside.

only i messed it up. i took afew on auto which turned out okish, but i then tried to take some on the manual settings i.e m,s,a,p but they are all rubbish, when i looked through the veiw finder the pics looked great but when i checked them when i got home they were all so dark some of which you could barely see the lights they were sstanding under, i was taken them from about 20-25ft away

any advice on what setting i can change to get a lighter shot, well disapointed as i knw i would have had some really good pics in there

I am surprised that you would have gotten a dark shot using a (I assume you have a Nikon?)
What I will often do, is use Av or Tv mode (aperture priority, or Time/shutter priority) to take a test shot, and make a note of the aperture and shutter speed used, then transfer these to manual for better control.
On most SLR cameras, what you see through the view-finder, is life, but with a mirror in the way. It is not a reflection of what the camera is going to produce (i.e., in real life, your eye adjusts automatically). If you have a live-view mode, this might be a better representation.
