Yes
Just about to pop out and take some motorway shots.

Good idea at this time of night, or will it be too dark?

What setting should i use?
Using a Canon eos1000d and 18-55mm lens

Tripod, AV mode, f/16 will give you the star effect on street lights.
If you are going to be doing some light trails, use bulb mode and play about with exposure time.

Cheers will be back in an hour :)

Just the topic I needed, found a good spot to try this, and my tripod arrived, and was about to ask a perfect exposure for this.

There is no perfect exposure im afraid, it depends on a, ambient light (the sky and how light it is) b, how bright the roads are and c, the amount of traffic. You really do have to sit and play with it im affraid... :D

Show us your results though stoke! :D

pics!!

i tried some night shots...the contrast is horrendous if its really dark
dusk i think may be better and if street lighting is around..even better

a car reversing taken at a long shutter speed from the rear...looks as if its going forward
mask the reversing lights

Sorry guys,

What with the stupidly cold weather and me forgetting my gloves, i didn't stay long.

Also there didn't seem to be many cars out either :(

i think the low amount of traffic and the length of road really made it hard to get the lights to join up.

Was fun watching all the boy racers slamming their breaks on too. :)

You did a good job there for your first time there fella! Kudos!! I find people tend to slow down while im on a bridge too... cant think why!

If your good with photoshop though try taking in RAW, then adjusting the white balance to loose the 'orangeyness' from the pic (if you cant take in raw experiment with your white balance in-camera) then if its a slow night traffice wise then leave all the setings as they are from pic to pic, then merge 2 or more in PS, this way it'll give you more solid looking lines leading from foreground to horizon. (try taking at dusk too to give the sky a little colour ;) )
Hope these tips help?

cheers for the advise - will give it another go soon :)

snap.. tried it myself for the first time last night.. agree was cold!

had camera on shutter priority, 4 sec exposure, iso 400 and set the white balance to incandescent as was getting to much of an orangey cast from street lights.. think its too dark (too much black at the top?) but wasn't that many cars out.. this was the best of the bunch.. was a bit daunting stood on a motorway bridge late at night!

one to try again ;)

Iv always wanted to do this type of shot but can never figure out which bridge to use and where to park etc  its weird how you start noticing alot more bridges and and places to shoot from as before I would just drive under them and not give it a second thought...
