Nikkor 17-55mm F2.8 as everyday lens

Hi all,
I'm looking to get back into owning a DSLR having only ever owned the Nikon D40 & 18-200mm VR.

Has anybody got the Nikkor 17-55mm F2.8 lens and would it pair up well on a D7000 or 300s?
Any pitfalls with owning such a heavy and expensive lens?

Would this be considered as a good everyday lens?
And anything to look out for when buying 2nd hand?

That Amazon link takes me to a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 and that will NOT pair with either of the Nikon bodies! A quick Google for the Nikkor 17-55 shows that it's a Dx lens so while it'll be fine on a D300, it'll either vignette on a D700 or take it into Dx mode which vastly reduces the MP available. That sort of focal range is very useful on Dx and equates (roughly) with the 24-70mm range that many FF users have as a walkabout lens.

Can't think of any pitfalls of a heavy lens - I shoot FF and use a D700 and 24-70 - other than the fact that the rig is heavy so benefits from a neoprene strap to help spread the load.

Hi Nod,

Sorry my mistake, I meant the D7000 which is also a DX body.

I was lucky enough to shoot with this lens in India for a fortnight earlier this year. It's stellar as you would expect, used it with my D7000, no issues what so ever. I wish I could afford to buy one myself, I would if I only shot DX not FX as well!
 
I'm going to keep a eye on 2nd prices for now.

It is a very nice lens, heavy but built like a tank. It's also weather sealed so with the D7000 I don't feel like I have to worry about a bit of rain or dust either which is a big positive. Compared to something like the Tamron 17-55 it is significantly bigger but the build is in a different league, the Tamron felt like cheap plastic.

I guess a lot of that won't really matter if you don't shoot outdoors but for those that do it really helps.
