Nikkor 18-300 or 28-300 lens?

Morning all.

I have a choice of the above lenses. I'm using a 7100 and already have a few primes and a 17-55 f2.8. I'm i right in thinking the more a lens covers (18-300) the quality suffers slightly? The cost difference between the two is £20. Will the 28-300 work fine on my dx camera?

What kind of filters would you have to buy?

For me either you sell the 17-55 and get the 18-300 or just get the 70-300 which is a cracking lens.

Hi Paul

Can't help you directly with either of these lenses (as I'm a Canon user), but I'd be careful as you could be disappointed with the results, especially compared to your 17-55F2.8. I'm not a fan of the "all in one lenses" I know they have a place to save the need to carry various lenses (especially useful if travelling / out for the day), but I would want to try them out and see what results I got with them at different focal lengths and make sure I was happy - nothing worse than missing the shot.

If you can, I'd recommend you try them out and go from there...
 
I've got a hoya hd pol, hoya pro1 variable nd, hoya hd infra red, nd 1000 from srb, and a few others.
 
I hear what your saying Andy. For what I'll be using it for the distortion control on my camera should sort most issues. My mind is set on those two lenses really. If the 28-300 being for fx, dx, 35mm works as well as the 18-300 I'd prefer this one in the thinking that being fx it will be slightly better glass?

Thats great, if you can, I'd certainly recommend you try them both out - firstly to make sure the distortion control will do what you want it to do and secondly you can see which one you prefer the results of (especially bearing in mind the very minimal difference in price)...

If no one on here has experience of these, could be worth a few phone calls to Nikon dealers and see what they say about each lens - are you getting one of the lenses recommended over the other...
