After saving hard for a while I finally went out and bought a brand new Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 lens, its fantastic.

Had it around 6 weeks now and used it about the same number of times and last night while shooting a fight night it developed a horrible grinding problem between 24mm and 35mm and between 50mm and 70mm its developed a squeak. It actually feels like someones got sand on the inside of the focus ring.

Its fair to say im not happy at all, have messaged Nikon to see what my options are as I have a warranty card. I dont want a repair on a 6 week old lens that's for sure, I want it replaced.

After reasons a few things on google it sounds like a common problem, anyone else experience the same thing??

You should take it back to where you brought it from, and see if they can replace it,and let them sort it out with Nikon :)

Agree with Simon - take it back and tell them you need need the lens for work purposes and will lose work without it.

At the very least I would expect loan of an identical lens (until yours can be fixed) or a straight swap replacement and let the retailer deal with Nikon.

Hi Matt

Sorry to hear this. I bought my 24-70 only a few days ago and I'm hoping it will stay as it should be but knowing my luck something will probably go wrong.

Most retailers allow 28 days grace for full replacements and will defer all matters to Nikon therafter, though with with discretion and some kindness some may just swap one over for you.

For what it's worth, if you do have to send it back to Nikon for repair you can be safe in knowing that this particular problem will be addressed and you should have many years of incident free shooting, rather than going for a replacement for a brand new one only for the problem to happen again.

It so annoying when something so new (and expensive!) stops working. Hope you get it sorted out.

I'm thinking of buying this lens soon, hope this isn't too common a problem.

Its actually a fairly common problem on this lens, better to get it sent to Nikon and get the innards "greased" which will cure it than to get a new one and have the same thing happen

Of reported mishaps it is the most common problem. It's not a "common problem with the lens" per se. Most 24-70's are actually fine and incident free but of course one doesn't hear reports of good lenses as often.

Thanks guys, its so annoying because its such a cracking lens. I had no option but to use it on the Sunday for a large martial arts show knowing the issue and it was producing storming images still so it doesnt seem to be affecting focusng or performance just yet.

Looking at my reciept I bout it on 6th April so reckon Jessops are going to say head to Nikon. Have already submitted a repair request with them so see what they say. Luckily I have no need for this lens for 2 weeks now so hoping I can get it sorted out before then.

Ill keep you updated ;)

The responsibility for getting it repaired is with the retailer. Jessops can say 'send it to Nikon' all they like, but you bought it from them so it's up to them to get it repaired.

if you're after a replacement over a fix then i would be demanding jessops take it back. i don't know the law on it, but i would still be shouting at the manager if they said send it to nikon.

on a side note, how do you find it on the D7000? i'm starting to think it might be the lens for me, i find myself always wanting more on the long end of my 17-50 tamron!

Spoke to Jessops this morning and they said that if it was within 30 days of purchase they will get a replacement in. Bad news is there are hardly any in the UK in the Jessops company with their head office waiting on an order of 150 (77 of those are pre-sold!!)

My purchase was 32 days ago and she has said she has ordered me a new one in but that could take 28 days or longer :(

The lens on the D7000 is awesome mate, producing fabulously sharp images and blows the socks on the Siggy 24-70 it replaced. ;)

Surely it would be better to demand a repair then. Nikon Just turned around my 16-35 in about 4 days, bearing in mind we had a bank holiday too.

I certainly wouldnt wait a month or more to get a replacement.

Or demand a refund on the basis that they are unable to supply a replacement....

Absolutely, clearly 'not fit for purpose'.
I cannot understand all this talk about "getting it repaired" ... it's 32 days old and faulty ... SOGA.

Because I'd rather get it repaired by Nikon in 4 days than wait a month or more for a replacement. Not that hard to understand.

I wouldn't accept a repair on a 32 day old lens, sorry but its too new. Ive demanded a replacement from Jessops and told them its my main lens and that something that costs £1200 shouldnt break down after 32 days and 6 times on my camera!!

Had a call back today from them and fair play to the guys they have sourced 2, 1 in Swindon and the other Cribbs Causway, which they have requested to be sent over. Should have a new one by Friday.

Result!
