Nikkor 28-70 or Tamron 24-70

Hi everyone! I'm looking at getting a midrange zoom and I had pretty much settled on the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC until a friend chucked the nikon 28-70 into the pot! Now the question is which one should I go for? Opinions from use etc would be really appreciated!

Nikon 24-70 isn't in consideration simply because I don't have enough pennies in the bank :(
 
I'm not sure if I'd miss it to be honest as I'd be looking to get a wide angle at some point in the near future as well and yes I'd heard their QC isn't all that good!
 
If you won't miss the 24-28 then you can always look into the Tamron 28-75 2.8 which is fantastic for the price - I picked mine up for £110 and it's great! Not as well built as the Nikon 28-70 but that might not be a problem as that is built like a tank & very heavy!
 
Love my 28-70 on my D800e.

Yep, its heavy, built like a tank, its not the greatest for dealing with flare but I'm sure it will still be working long after I'm not...

What's the image quality like with it on the d800? Most stuff I've seen or read about it has been on a D3
 
as good as it gets...., seriously if you can get past the huge lump that it weighs....its actually very good...

That's what I did, bought the 28-75 f/2.8.
Great lens, and exceptional for the s/h money. Did have one before that was soft down one side, but my current example is spot on. Great at f/2.8, pin sharp at f/4. Will not be selling in a rush. So consider one of these first.
 
Not had tamron's 28-70mm but my Nikkor is pretty awesome. Color straight out of the camera is rich and contrasty. Many reviews rate the IQ of the 28-70 Nikkor on the same par as 24-70.

Tamron 24-70 supposed to be decent but you have the draw back of 82mm filter, third party lens which can potentially cause incompatibility with newer bodies...my 17-50 tamron wasn't able to focus thru live view on later Nikon bodies and needed a re-chip from tamron. I can't remember the cost of it but I didn't do it because it represented too much % of the lens' value. Also the newer tamron lens has quality control issues. There are many story of inconsistent AF from the 24-70 VC.
