hello all, after a little advice. i need a lens for group shots, mainly family portraits where say upto 7 in a family would a 35mm be wide enough on a cropped body? i have the nifty fifty 1.8 atm and am finding it a little to tight. is a 35 that much wider or should i look at something else?

Any info would be great or any shots taken wide on a 35 1.8 would be even better

fair difference between the 35 and 50, but maybe even the 35 isn't quite wide enough. I love mine (35) and wouldn't trade it for the world. But for wider shots it sometimes isn't wide enough.

Do you have the 18-xx kit lens? I use the x55 version and it is a sharp lens, has plenty of width and a fair amount of length, and is nice and light. On the D90 it is a really nice lens to have around. It isn't great in low light, so if indoor evening photos are your thing, then a good flash is a must. You should be able to pick up a used 18-55 + Jessops 360D for the same price as the 35/1.8.

The other alternative that I've considered a few times is either a 24 or 28 2.8 (or faster). Then again, the 24-70 would be intriguing as well.

the 24-70 2.8 would be perfect but a tad outta my price range (One Day) i got my d7k as body only and have no kit lens but i have been looking at the 18-105 vr, is this as good or beter than the 18-55?
 
The 35mm is a cracker. I posted two baby pics yesterday on the people forum with that and the d7000. Its better IQ than any zoom I've used including the 24-70.

The other decent option is a Tamron 17-50 f2.8.

I have the 50mm f1.4d and I find its too close in most situations.
Picked up a 28mm f2.5 manual vivitar m42... Think its a little wider than the 35mm you are looking at but I do miss the af :/ so might be getting one before the end of the year.

If my siggy comes up some one posted a link to comparisons to lenses... think the 35mm and 50mm should be on there so you can compare and see whether you need to go wider.

Hope you find the lens you need.

If you want I can try to find a willing subject and take a pic with both so you can see the difference?

Another vote for the 35mm 1.8. ****ing awesome lens, much much better than the price suggests

i agree the 35mm its a very good lens it will be a 50mm for you it all depends how far you can step back.
 
i went to warehouse express and had a play with a few different lenses, the 35mm is lush and is now on my lenses to buy list but it just isn't wide enough, i ended up buying the 18-125 siggy. Just been having a quick play and the sharpness and colour are just lovely, for the price £253 something im not going to complain about it, i am even now still amazed at how sharp i got the missuses eyes.
