Anyone have one of these, I am looking for a longer lens, and to be honest, F4 is fast enough for me and the price difference between this and a 2.8 version is significant plus the weight saving appeals. Its still a fair chunk, I assume and hope its sharp and about as sharp as my 24-70 F2.8. I'd use it for portraits, and long distance landscapes where sometimes, a long lens is what you want. Occasionally it may even go in a rucksack up a hill so the weight saving is nice.
 
Having the 2.8 version i didn't think the weight differance between that and the f4 was that significant until i just checked the spec's.
It's nearly twice the weight :eek:
 
I owned this lens and it is very sharp. The VR on it is the best out of any Nikon lens I have ever used. It is also light which is great to handhold.
 
I've got the f/4 and I love it - it's just as good as the f/2.8 and far easier to carry. The only snag is it doesn't come with a collar. I bought the RRS LC-A12 package.

But it is so light that it doesn't need one. The F2.8 that I owned before was quiet heavy that it had to be used with a collar.
 
I used to own this, great quality lens and very sharp on the D800.. I found I didn't use it much though so sold it on and bought the 24-120F4 instead which is very good too and I find it much more useful for the landscapes I shoot.. it's not as sharp as the 70-200 though although it is a fair bit lighter and more compact, the 70-200 is still a fair lump to be carrying around in a rucksack with the rest of your gear

I've got a 24-70 and Ziess 21. I'm in love with both of these just need something longer from time to time which is where this will come in. I'll use it to shoot the odd stag, portrait and zoo trip

I tried it without a collar (before I bought one) and the BH-55 pitched forward at almost any friction setting. It's a lot easier (and safer) with the collar.

The LC-A12's foot is detachable so the collar doesn't take up much room when shooting handheld.

I wanted the 70-200 f2.8. Looked to buy 2nd hand. None about so I got a new f4 then there were loads of 2.8 being advertised:mad:.
Wish I had waited or saved more. If using for wildlife the 2.8 works better with a teleconverter. The iq on the f4 is ok but not as good as the 24-70 in my unscientific opinion. However it is much better than the 70-300 vr it replaced.
