I'm looking to buy my first lens as I've been looking to get something with qa bot more zoom and I've been offered a Nikkor 70-300mm 4.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR for £250 (second hand). Is this a good price for a second hand one?

I've looked around and seen new ones for £350+ but wasn't sure about second hand.

Any help would be appreciated.

£250 doesn't sound too extortionate, they normally sold for around the £275-300 mark when I was looking on eBay at a used one.

There have been a couple a bit lower in the classifieds on here recently, but since you won't be able to access them yet by the time you can there might not be one pop up for a while.

If the £250 one is in good condition, I'd consider going for it.
 
£250 seams a reasonable price if its good and damage free.
For the money this lens is great.

All AF-S lenses will work with your 3100, yes, and non DX (FX) lenses are perfectly fine... you don't need a DX lens... either are fine. AF-D lenses you will not be able to use as they require a body with a built in AF motor which your 3100 does not have... all AF-S are fine.
 
I got mine off the PC/Currys store on ebay for £259.99 new.

Good lens, use it a lot.
