Nikkor 85 F1.8 - Noisy As Hell

Guys, just wanted to check this was normal and not me having recieved a duff copy. The AF is rough compared to other lenses I've used (you can almost feel the gears) and it is very noisy.

Does it feel/sound rough if you manually focus?

I have the AF-D version of this lens and it is quite noisy, the focus has a manual feel to it but isnt rough or tough

If I switch to manual focus mode on the D700 it calms down quite a bit but it's still feels rough to focus.

I would say more so than my 35mm f2 which is of the same build quality.
