Anyone have/used one of these lenses. Have read good and not so good reports. It's predecessor, the 3.5-5.6 was routinely slated but this, it's successor, seems to have some favourable reviews. Thinking of it as a general purpsose walk around lens, maybe also for portraits or even weddings. I know Mark Cleghorn uses the Canon equivalent most of the time, but wondered how Nikon users viewed it.

Any opinions.

Can't seem to find much about it through google other than press releases.

By all accounts from users on here, it's a good buy, better than the previous version. I know one guy who uses one on a D3 for general sooting and he rates it better than his 24-70 f/2.8 because it is so much more versatile in terms of the zoom. He's well aware that the IQ isn't as good but overall, the slight trade-off in IQ is more than made up for with equal AF performance, better zoom rage, plus the VR for low light.

Will probably be my choice when I move to a D3 as a main walkabout lens but I'll make my decision at Focus 2011 when I handle one :)
 
seems distortion can be an issue on this lens at the wide end compared to a 24-70mm , but for a walk around lens it seems ideal especially with the extra reach it gives

You get distortion at the wide end of the 24-70, all depends what you shoot as to if it is a major problem, bit like anything if you look for a problem you will find it.

Same as soft corners ... who looks at the corners rather than the subject of the image, other than people testing lenses.

I must admit now that I have the D700 the 24 - 120 has a certain appeal, however I want to give my 28-105 f3.5-f4.5 a good testing first to see if it is as good on full frame as it is on my D300, it must be the Nikkor best value for money lens out there, Grays have several used ones ranging between £100 and £150.
