Yes
was about to sell a Nikkor 50mm f2 lens -- Prior to shipping, mounted on D40 for a few trial shots

Fitted ok but the Aluminium "mounting" ring rotated on lens barrel - smoothly not jerky. but all the way round and albeit with some pressure needed

Maybe ok, but refuse to sell a "problem" --so any comments please ?

Do you mean that the entire lens rotates after mounting on a camera-body? Or that part of the lens rotates?

no - the lens mounts and clicks in solidly

aperture and focus rings can then rotate to their stops in either direction without moving the lens body

but then the thin alloy "grip" ring can be rotated round and round the lens body
without rotating the body

if doesn't appear to cause a prob = but wondered why

It shouldn't do that...maybe a small screw missing? Any tiny holes in that ring where a screw might live?

Might be worth giving it a service before selling it - it cuts massively into your profit-margin, but at least you'll be doing the right thing by any buyer...

maybe a small screw missing? ......nope

I wouldn't pass on. Only paid £35 offered £26 - and withdrawn when found faulty
see how the ring index pip has moved away from the lens index line
service cost more than £26/35 I guess. Ill give it away if I sell the F3

thanks for replies..............

Looks like it to me - it's where the fungus has 'eaten' the coating, even though there's no organic growth there now...

Returned a (mint-) lens to a well known supplier a couple of weeks ago with something very similar and under a bench magnifier you could clearly see the etched branching pattern. They were really good about it so no worries...

Never having seen this before I'm interested in your comment "even though there's no organic growth there now..."

...visions of mouldy bread spring to mind

A cursory wipe with a lens-tissue will have removed anything there...stuff that finds its way to the internal elements is a lot harder to shift.

Usually happens with kit that's left in camera-bags in dark cupboards for a few years or more.
Sunlight (even indirect) kills it. Hence my never keeping any of my kit tucked away; it lives next to the living-room window where there's lots of UV bouncing around to kill the spores.

To be honest, you'd probably not notice any significant degradation of IQ since it's right at the edge. Flare and CA might be enhanced just at that point, but apart from that...? If you're careful and used a lens hood...

That's good to know, though I'd be worried about any internal spread.

Takes a while to form. Like I said, it's usually found on lenses that have been languishing in the attic for months or years...
