Nikkor Lens + D40

Evening all,

Quick question as I really don't know anything about lenses.

Basically someone has offered me a AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-100mm f/3.5-5.6 G lens, is this compatible with the Nikon D40 does anyone know?

I don't know anymore about it except its from the old SLR not the DSLR.

Any help much appreciated.

You need to be looking for lenses that have AF-S as you need a lens with an in-built motor. Other manufacturers also have such lenses, for example, Sigma's HSM models.

Non AF-S lenses will be manual focus on a D40 as that camera has no in-body motor and thus relies on the lens having one.

AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-100mm f/3.5-5.6 G lens

AF is auto focus -- but needs a motor in the body to drive - not in the D40

3 Nikon budget lens [but with good image quality] with AF-S are

18-55 AF-S DX [ there is a VR version - not required below 55mm IMO but helpful]
55-200 AF-S DX VR
and 35mm 1.8 [superb low light] AF-S

55-300 and 70-300 are more expensive

cheers for the info I suspected it wouldn't auto focus with the D40 but guess still useable with manual focus and not bad for free.

not too sure about the D40
but using Manual Nikkor 50mm lens on my D5000
turn 'mode' selector to Manual
the green 'focus confirm' light will show in the viewfinder

you could always shoot at the 'hyperfocal distance' for each aperture/focal length to obtain focus - but that's another can of worms...

cheers for that. I suppose it's about time I learnt to manually focus instead of ALWAYS using auto focus lol. It'll be something to have a play around with anyway.
