Nikkor lenses vs third party

I'm currently a Canon man. I have about six Canon lenses and two Samyang. But now I'm thinking of selling up. Because I want a Nikon D800.

However, I'm put off by the seemingly absurdly overpriced Nikkor lenses. I mean - the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 is £1200 on Amazon, the 70-200 is £1600. This makes Canon L series lenses look a bargain in comparison. The equivalent Sigma/Tamron lenses can be had for less than half the price and they get perfectly good reviews. Advanced Photographer magazine does comparison tests and they always come out well, being only slightly softer at the edges at some apertures, nothing you would really notice or couldn't fix.

So if I get the D800 will I be wasting my money if I get Sigma lenses?

This could be a very expensive and rather totally unnecessary test exercise.

Have a think about 5DIII or a new nice lens instead. There is nothing that incredible about D800, particularly at higher ISOs, and you will need some fairly incredible glass to truly take advantage of that 36MP sensor. That probably means Zeiss primes instead of Sigma, Tamron or even Nikon zooms.

All lens prices have sky rocketed but Canon seem to have pushed their prices up an amazing amount.
