Is there any difference in the IQ when using a Nikon TC-1.4E II against the TC 1.4E. Does Nikon state anywhere what changes were made when bringing out the newer version.
I am lead to believe the only difference is that the TC II lineup was to do with using lighter alloys to decrease the weight. As far as I understand there are no optical or compatibility changes.
To quote Ken Rockwell: "Nikon changed the cosmetics slightly, changed the lettering to read "AF-S" and renamed it the TC-14E-II. ... The TC-14E and TC-14E II are identical except for the name and trim."
Personally, 90% of what I have taken with that combo is a bit "blurgh". Probably for anyone not used to what the 70-200 VR is capable of *without* the TC would think it would be ok, but its really a lot worse.
I only use it now if I find I am out somewhere minus the 300 f4 and desperately need the extra reach.
