I'm after a UWA lens very soon and can't make my mind up.

I'd love a Nikon 10-24mm but doesn't seem like there's been much talk about them on here? (been searching)

What I want to know is are they worth the price tag they carry? Sigma's and Tamron's are nearly half the price!

I'm looking for one 2nd hand but there doesn't seem much about (I've been looking on here, ebay, MPB etc...)

I've read that the sigma's can be a bit hit and miss whether they are sharp or not and I get the feeling Tamron's are not very great either :lol: but I've been told the Sigma is the better of the 2? I know there's the Tokina 11-16 as a choice, but this wont AF on my D60 will it, and the Tamron for that matter?

The cost of buying the Nikon isn't a major issue, I have the money to do so... but will I be disappointed I spent an extra £200/300 on it over a Sigma?

Any advice on where to get one 2nd hand or is it a case of just dropping on one? I don't really want to buy an import from ebay either.

And lastly, anyone got any sample shots with this lens?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As alternatives to the 10-24 go, the Tokina 12-24 f/4 is a corker and probably the best of the third part ultra-wides, although the 11-17 f/2.8 has a big following also. They're both the best built and are generally regarded as the best optically for non OEM glass.

The sigma 10-20 is hit and miss (the three I've used were appalling for corner sharpness( but I've heard the f/3.5-4.5 version is better than the new one, but I can't substantiate.

The Nikon 12-24 f/4 is the king but expensive; it kicks the ass out of the sigma in every way and is better than the Tokina, but only when you're buying used (it's about £450 used, the same price as a new Tokina 12-24).

Don't know about the Tokina 10-17 or the Tamron 10-24.
 
Thanks for you comment, would the 2mm at the wide end make a big difference? I see the Tokina 12-24 II will AF on my D60? (one on ebay atm)

The wideness of the Nikon is what's pushing me towards it, I just sort of ruled out 12-xx lenses :lol:
 
The Nikon isn't great to be honest- their 12-24 is much better.

I've tested all of the UWA's apart from the sigma 8-16.

As you have a D60 I'd say either the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 or the 12-24 Tokina II as your best bets. It's better if you can try a Sigma lens out to make sure it works as it should as my experience of Sigma is that they disappointingly suffer from quality issues.

The Tokina 12-24 version 2 will auto focus with the D60 as it has a built in motor but the original version doesn't so make sure you choose the right one.

The Tamron was the worst performing UWA- very unsatisfying. Personally I'd choose the Tokina but as I already use the 116 I may be slightly biased these days:D

2nm is nothing at that focal length - it's probably easier to take step back :) it's easy to think that 2mm difference will be as dramatic as 50mm difference on a telephoto but in reality, you would hardly know the difference. I can't tell the difference between the angle if view between the 12mm and my current 14mm....

I actually got rid of my Nikon 13-24 because I wasn't using it to it's full potential, plus I wanted a f/2.8 14mm that would focus closer for editorial work. I fi miss it I have to say.....

Buying a wide zoom would I go for the Nikon again? Only if I had the money; i bought the Tokina 12-24 once and although it didn't look as nice, it performed equally well for half the price.
 
I've read the Tokinas are prone to flares and CA but I haven't shoot with one.

I'm looking to buy a UWA in the future and I've managed to try (but could'nt shoot, I wasn't allowed to) some lenses on a D90 body and you could definitely see the difference in the viewfinder between tokina 11-16, 12-24, sigma 10-20 and nikkor 10-24.

From all the research I've been doing it all sums up to: it depends whether you can take some steps back to get more field (sometimes you can't), are willing to spend that much money for the Nikkor and/or you grab yourself a good copy (Sigma)...

I ordered a Tokina 12-24mm F4 version 2.
Kinda disappointed to find out today that the version 2 won't autofocus using liveview with a D7000 and possibly all new Nikon models.
Not that I have that camera or use liveview much, but others might be affected. I guess with any 3rd party lenses, you'll have to risk losing autofocus compatibility with future camera bodies.
 
I have the Nikon 14-24, and cannot wait to get out and take some shots with it! I had the Tokina 11-16 f2.8, and i got to say, it was a cracking lens, but definately feel the 14-24 is better built, and the few yest shots i have taken with the 14-24 are definately better! I just have to purchase a full frame camera now to make maximum use of the lens. Mmmmmmm! D700, or D3s!?!?!

I don't plan on just doing landscapes with it tbh I want to see if I can get a bit creative with it too, so kind of want to go as wide as I can.

How can I make sure I get a good sharp copy of a lens when buying 2nd hand? Or is it just pot luck?

I'd appreciate any sample images with these lenses if anyone has them :)
 
I've got a second hand 10-24mm Nikon and I've not had any issues with it, in fact its brilliant.

The contrast on my copy is great and I've not had any CA issues either, mine is mine forever! I can't say more than that.

What would say the going rate for one 2nd hand is?

I've no idea on the going rate, I know the buyer at an independant place and from memory he sold it to me for about half retail.

Its probably my most used lens, well I've only got 2 and the other is my 18-200 travel lens. all I want now is a 50/1.8 and an SB600/700.

I'm finally getting over my gear junky habit! What with photography, Audio, Cars, computers, and a mortgage I've had to temper my spending.

I just bought one last night :D

I don't that many expensive hobbies, the only other thing that is a drain on my money is my car :lol: and I'm a long way off spending what I have spent on the car compared to camera gear!
