Hi all,

I have been looking at the Nikon 105mm AF-S VR Micro lens and all reviews are very good, and the price certainly makes it stand out as a good product.

I have heard mixed reviews about Sigma's equivalent, some say it's rubbish while others say it's one of the best Macro lenses ever built and compares to Nikon's own brand. Now, I am not looking to buy "cheap glass" on a whim without thought, because I want good results, although I would be very interested in peoples opinions who have experience with these lenses. What are the pros and cons of each and which is better?

Who's said the Sigma is rubbish??? The Sigma 105 OS is one of the very best, if not the best (bar silly ones like Canon's MPE lenses) macro lenses out there, especially for the money. I have one and can't recommend it more highly, even against the Canon L equivalent. The IQ was the same if not slightly better at a third of the price.

They are not only "macro" lens to be used for macros, James ....... I use mine, (a Nikon), as a general lens and it is very good ....... I reckon one of the best in lots of situations

If you want it specifically for macros I would spend an hour going through the macro section which is quite extensive in discussing the subject, equipment and set ups etc.
