Nikon 135mm 2.8 Ai on a D600, odd behaviour

Hi all. Picked up what I believe to be a Nikon 135mm 2.8 Ai at a bargain price from ebay. I've had the Ais version of this lens before so was expecting this one to behave the same on my D600. Basically, when I mount the lens and plug in the numbers for a non CPU lens, the camera's displayed aperture is not changing whilst I rotate the aperture ring on the lens. Consequently the camera can't meter with the lens. The lens itself works fine at all apertures.

I have several other legacy lenses and none have behaved like this, they all display the chosen aperture on the camera as you change aperture on the lens.

Any ideas?
 
Does it have to be set at F22 to work?? It's been a while since I had my last Nikon.

Depends what you mean by 'plug in'. Having previously registered the lens parameters, you also need to select whatever lens no you've allocated to it, for it to register with the metering when mounted. Make sense? However I'm not aware that you can use a control dial to vary the aperture of a non-cpu lens.
 
Thanks for replies folks. Mystery solved and it was me being a thicko. This isn't an Ai lens afterall It's a pre AI lens so doesn't have the notch that moves the camera's aperture lever. I'm a little lucky I didn't bend it in hindsight. Lesson learned.

you could modify it yourself if you are handy with a small saw and file
