I am looking to swap my 14-24mm for a 14mm prime, I originally bought the lens for my D300, being a crop sensor i really needed the width as in reality it was only 27mm, now i have a D700 the 24-70 is wider so the lens is virtually redundant.

Also since i got my 21mm carl zeiss im not taking the 14-24mm due to its size (trying to keep the weight down) but i am missing the extreme wide sometimes as it can be really creative, so i wouldn't just get rid of the lens altogether.

The 14mm prime is loads smaller and lighter so the chances of making in to the kit bag would be greatly improved plus i would probably end up using it more than the zoom and so trying even more shots out on a shoot.

Now the reason for the post, is it as good as the zoom? its an older design but that doesnt matter to me, it hasnt got the nano coating which is a loss due to it being so wide but i dont tend to shoot in the sun anyway, the only review i could find was KR, is there anybody on here with one, even better if they have used both?

What would you do?

Cannockwolf, I'm thinking the same - get the 14mm and chop in the 12-24, which only really use at between 12-14mm anyway.

Have a look at the photozone.de review - seems a straight-up lens but with some compromises. Of course, they're looking at it as a new lens costing $1500, although I've seen mint used ones for £700, which is what i was prepared to pay. At that price there's no way of getting hold of a 14-24 so it's almost the only option. However, note that photozone say it's not a match for the 14-24 overall - very much a case of what you want to pay and how much you want this particular lens.

I know Sigma did a very well-liked 14mm f/3.5 - apparently it's a cracker but it's old and slow focussing, but costs half again used.

I suppose the thing for you is that you would have some readies if you traded in the 14-24 for a 14mm prime, but would that money make up for any loss in quality?
