Have read the reviews but would appreciate feedback off anyone who has used both..........

I am not concerned about the bigger aperture size of the 17-35, I would be shooting around 5.6 for the majority of shots - my main concern is IQ and if the reviews are to be believed there is little in it.............?

May use on the DX (25-40 on 35mm would be a great focal length for me) and then I could leave a nice longer prime on the FX for closer/candid shots.

Feedback welcome as well as pricing tips - currently looking at Warehouse Express which has the f4 at £848.
 
Only £200 diff in price also................is it worth the extra 200?
 
Can't comment on the 17-35mm, but I do have the 16-35mm and have used it on my D3s.
Very happy with it. No problems at all. Usual Nikon quality. :thumbs:

+ will the distortion mentioned in reviews at the wide end be lessened on DX format?
 
Again, never used the 17-35, but very happy with my 16-35 on both FX and DX.
In fact its replaced my 24-70 as my most used lens at the moment.

Is the distortion at 16mm lessened on the DX?
 
I'm the opposite from the majority here. Never used 16-35mm, but have been very happy with 17-35mm on D3 for a good few years now. Of course there's distortion as there is with every wide angle, but you just have to learn to control it with different perspectives, or get creative with it. IQ is excellent, and I'd not even consider replacing it with another wide angle until I have to.

The reviews of 16-35mm seem positive especially on IQ, although some people I have spoken to say it's designed as a mid range lens so build quality is lesser than that of 17-35mm which is solid pro lens designed to last an age. The flip side of the coin is that 16-35mm is also much lighter due to smaller aperture, and its "lesser" quality making it easier to transport.

I don't think you'll go far wrong with either really.

Of course, you are effectively chopping off the distorted bits as the DX will only use the center of the frame.

If I get time I'll do some samples on the D700 and D3100.
