Nikon 16-85 vs Sigma 18-70 2.8-4

Hi Guys and gals,

I'm looking to upgrade my kit lens (18-55). I'd like a little more range as 55 is just a touch short at times. I also would like to go faster if possible. The 17-50 Tamron is interesting, but a little short. The 16-85 is about the perfect range, but not especially fast. Is the sigma a good compromise of the two? How does the image quality compare with the nikon? Any other options?

I'm not hard on my gear, so durability isn't really a problem. I have a D90, so an inbuilt focus motor isn't mandatory. VR is a nice benefit, but not mandatory on this range for me. Manual focus override would be a nice to have (the 16-85 has it).

Any other options?

Have you considered the 18-105VR? Probably no better in IQ over your current lens (it was also available as a kit lens), but has double the focal range and you can pick them up pretty cheap. If you need fast glass you could go for a prime such as the 35mm 1.8.

I have the 35 1.8, thus my desire for more fast glass.

Th 18-105 gives me more range, but isn't a significant upgrade over the current. The 16-85 is an increase in range and quality (both image and build). The Sigma is range and speed, maybe quality.

Don't get me wrong, the 18-55 is a great little lens. Mine is sharp as a tack wide open and at all focal lengths. My only reasons for upgrading are more speed for lower light and out of focus backgrounds and a bit more range. The Sigma seems to give all of those, the Nikon range.
