Hi,im looking at buying a good allround walkabout lens.I will be using it mainly for landscapes, architecture, outdoor shots.Has anyone any comments on the above lens, sample pics would be a bonus. Thanks

Yep, excellent lens, I took this lens and a D60 to Morroco last year and was very pleased with the lens.

However I would advise the 18-70 DX, its just as good optically and 1/3rd the price.

I did loads of research when upgrading to my D90.

I was going to buy body only and then get the 16-85mm

In the end I couldnt justify the extra cost for a lens which is no quicker than the kit lens.

It does have other advantages though, such as better build quality, metal mount, better glass, wider end.

If image quality is more important to you than the speed of a lens then it'll be a great buy, otherwise the 18-105 or as suggested above the 18-70 are great alternatives

I have a 16-85VR on my D300. It's a very, very good lens.

More can be seen at my flickr page. The 18-70 is reputed to be just as sharp so the downside to the 16-85 is price. You have to decide if you want/need the VR.

I had the Nikon 18-70mm lenses originally, and I was very happy with it. When it got damaged though, I chose to replace it with the Nikon 16-85mm VR, and it was one of the best moves I made. :D The extra 2mm on the wide end makes a surprising difference, and the 85mm meant I didn't have to change over to the 70-300mm (when I had one) as often. The VR also comes in very handy in low light situations, or just when I wanted to try a slower than usual shutter speed handheld. It gets the thumbs up from me. I'm on to my 2nd one. :)

Thanks for your comments,id never considered the 18-70.I know theres a big difference in price, but for an extra 2mm and VR im tending to agree with Redhead. Thanks Paul for your samples, very nice.

I don't really understand the point about paying so much more for an extra 2mm, when you could buy a Tokina 12-24 and a Nikon 18-70 DX and cover 12 to 70mm for less. When I had a 16-85 VR often I still needed a wide angle.

Anyhow here are some of my shots - I could have done all this with an 18-70 DX really  - but the little D60 + 16-85 VR makes a very nice discrete travel kit in a camera shy country.

I too have a 16-85 and would highly recommend it, my friend has one too. I bought mine from Clifton cameras ordered on a Wednesday and it was delivered before 8 the next morning! Think the going rate at the minute is £399 with a tamron filter and lens hood

i took some shots at a wedding with the VR turned on shooting with lowish ambient light and balancing flash for a wedding reception/Breakfast and they came out really well.

Have to agree with Tom,some nice pics Andy cheers.Im getting more and more impressed with this lens.

Do you know anyone local who has just bought Nikon? They are eligible for Nikon plus. They would get

£50 off the 16-85
£50 off the 70-300VR
£100 off the 10-24

I tried an 18-70 a few months ago, its a very nice lens

Hi Dave no i dont off hand, that would be handy though.Never heard of nikon plus before, tell me more?

Neither have I... I typed in Nikonplus came up with a nikon page asking for you to login...

according to info on the right of the page its 1st instruction say's this -

"To access the Nikon Customer Loyalty system, please enter your shop's unique ID and password and click 'Login' "

I tried with my Nikon ID & password but that didn't work...
