As above, does or has anyone here used both of these lenses, i'm guessing the 14-24mm gives better results than the 17-35mm but how much better ? i know the big disadvantage on the 14-24 is not being able to use filters, but is it a deal breaker for you ? i would really like your thoughts on both these lenses positive and negative, many thanks in advance :)

Because I was having an issue with not being able to use filters on my 14-24, I tried the 17-35mm. I have to say I thought it was a bit softer, but I was looking hard!
Chances are you wouldn't notice the difference until you got really big.

You can use filter on it - but it requires a little extra work. Some people just prefer a ready solution with the filter threads being there but to me not having them is not a strong enough excuse not to use filters or lens. I think we all are getting lazier - Lee Frost was using filters on some extreme lenses when he needed just by using blue tack ;)

If you interested in possible non blue tack'y solutions - I referenced them earlier in Gary's quest for the same solution here

the dp review solution is know to cause vignettes on full frame. Its a solution, but only really for crop sensors.

Mainly for the filters reason, I sold my 14-24 and bought a 17-35. I'm extremely happy with what I have. I can't see any difference but then I never had them side by side.

It was merely an illustration to show that it is possible. The guys on those forums I referred to also mentioned that Cokin largest filter system (X Pro) does not cause vignetting on FX. I assume that X Pro filter holder can be attached by similar means to the ones in those examples.

Well I have both and for me the 17-35 is the better lens - more compact and the fact that it has a 77mm thread on the front means that in the environments I work in, the front element won't be getting trashed half as quickly as the 14-24...

Also now that I have FX bodies, the 14-24 is too wide for my kind of images - I'll stick with the older lens and the 24-70...

The 17-35 is an awesome lens and having tried it I am seriously thinking in getting one myself but as puddleduck pointed out it is getting very hard to get a reliable one without AF motor problems nowadays...

Could you please elaborate on this a bit, as i haven't heard anything about this, and i'm thinking of hiring the 17-35 for a holiday, so want to make sure i've covered everything before i go ahead, thanks :)

Why would it be hard to get a reliable one? Is this lens dicontinued and if so when?

Eh? First I've heard of this - very reliable bit of kit - mine's about 14 years old now and has done 3 tours of Iraq, 3 Tours of Afghanistan (now on it's fourth) as well as trips to Africa, Norway and Brunei.
Serviced once about 10 years ago after a trip to Bosnia.

Thanks Rob, i should think that lot is a good enough endorsement for it :D, i more than likely will be hiring this first anyway to give it a try

It's not something about the lens you or somebody else owns or how reliable it is - it is just about the fact that it is relatively hard to find used one in a good condition. I'll let Andy comment on this himself (if he stumbles upon this thread).

17-35's are still listed as being available 'new' from Nikon UK - are they? Obviously since I already have one I've not bothered to find out from the usual retailers...

I cannot find it in any of the usual Nikon places - thought it was long discontinued.

Retailers might not be stocking it as it was pretty expensive back in the day and mostly Pro's were buying them - but it's still listed as 'current' in Nikon's line-up...you might have to order one and it might have to come all the way from Japan - but it's do-able...

Retailers will stock up on what they think will move quickly and give the best turnaround - new kit is more attractive to buyers who always want the latest - assuming that it's also the 'best'...

The price hasn't changed significantly since I bought mine all those years ago, meaning it's better value now than it was then...

Mifsuds have a new one at £1500, a couple of grey importers are also listing them. There always used to be loads around used, that was until Nikon launched the D3, then they became very desirable.

There is a used 17-35 on an auction site where the seller states that it emits a high pitched squeak when autofocusing and a common problem with this lens. Is it very expensive to change the motor if that's what is needed?

Mine did that occasionally but only when auto-focussing from very close to infinity at first start-up - it's not the AF motor, it's the helicoils (screw-thread) - they need a lube - take it into Nikon for a service and it's done as part of that.

Doesn't affect function or image-quality and only happens once every on-and-off cycle...

I picked one up for £250 used and its superb, just superb. Perfect nick with the pouch and not a mark on it.

That was a steal DG. I have one and love it to bits. A bargain at about £600 from a very nice man on here. They have been discontinued though and the stock that is around is just the last bits and bobs. I am pretty sure that Nikon announced it over 12 months ago.

I do love the 14-24 as well though but it doesn't get as much use as the 17-35.

Chris :)

£750.00 and its yours. I have been offered that several times over already  but I have to say, I would rather have the 24-70 in my bag as thats the best mid range zoom I have seen, owned etc....

Way above my budget at the moment, was worth a punt though, on both our parts :D

Yep. To be fair, if and when I can afford another 24-70 I would chop this in, but I dont really know if I need another 24-70 based on weight, price, width and of course how little I shoot now....

I'm really after one for landscape shot's, but realistically i'm not going to be able to afford one this side of Xmas, i'm going to hire one later this month from "Lens for hire" for a holiday in Thailand, they do great hire prices with no deposit required, it will at least give me a chance for a decent try out of it :)
